Food: A Word on Garlic

This is a pet peeve of mine, because I just thought about it as I was forced to fall back on garlic powder for my meatloaf rather than fresh garlic, which a year ago I hadn’t even thought to use — the powder just happened to be in the cabinet.

A four-pack of fresh garlic at my local supermarket costs me 69 cents. Garlic can last, I’ve read, nearly 8 months in the fridge.

A bottle of garlic powder can cost six dollars if you go for the brand-name stuff.

Now, consider how many segments — and how many servings of garlic — you can get from four cloves of garlic, add the fact that it’s much fresher with a generally fuller flavor…

Why aren’t we all investing in a garlic press again?

(Well, even I’ll be honest about this one — convenience. …except I can’t stand using garlic powder now that I’m used to the fresh stuff.

Ideally, growing your own garlic will cut nearly all the costs entirely.
